The Lickey Hills Society

Working to protect and enhance the Lickey Hills and their environs

The Lickey Hills Society was founded in 1984 and is a registered charity.

The Society welcomes new members, to simply register their support for the work of the Society or to get involved in as many or as few of the activities as they choose.

Our major aim these days is to support the work of the Rangers, and in so doing, enhancing the Country Park and its environs.

The Society is also concerned with:

  • Helping to preserve the landscape and natural beauty of the Hills and surrounding area.
  • Resisting inappropriate developments which would have a detrimental effect on the Hills and the surrounding area.
  • Encouraging public awareness of the area's amenities, history and natural history.
  • The Society worked with the Rangers to design, finance and build information boards at key points around the Country Park.
  • Society members helped to write and publish a book of walks in the Country Park and beyond.
  • We worked with the Rangers to design, finance and build the information boards at key points around the Country
  • Park. We also helped write and then published a book of walks around the Country Park

Working with the Rangers, the Society has organised a variety of practical activities including:

  • Heathland Clearance – to support the regeneration of the heathland
  • Balsam Bashing – sessions in the summer to remove the highly invasive Himalayan balsam
  • Duck House Building – duck houses on the pool above the gold club cafe
  • Pond Puddling – work to promote the development of new ponds.
  • Restoring the Boat House on the main pool.
  • Cleaning benches and restoring the paths in the gardens in front of the Old Rose and Crown.

Providing equipment, materials and signage in consultation with the Rangers - examples

  • Bat Detectors – used on special occasions
  • Walkie Talkies for use by the Rangers
  • Tools – variety of tools and equipment bought over the years for the use of the Rangers
  • Two nest box cameras – pictures from the boxes can be seen on the TV in the Visitor Centre
  • Funding for ‘Welcome’ and Information Boards for different locations in the Country Park
  • Non-slip strips fitted to ten bridges in the Country Park to make them safer to cross.
  • Tree poppers (to remove unwanted trees and scrub) to support heathland clearance work.
  • New picnic tables outside the Visitor Centre.
  • Bicycle racks at the Visitor Centre and near the golf club café.
  • A digital projector for use by the Rangers, used for presentations to school groups and others.
  • A PA system – speaker and mics for use at the Wassail.

Supporting specific events:

  • The Wassail – held in the Community Orchard every January, a popular family event attended by over 250 people in 2023.
  • The Bilberry Wake – held in the summer – a fun event for children and their adults
  • A weekly walk – every Thursday, a free walk led by members of the Society.
